Abstract

A new report from the State Planning Office says that, given the choice, 43 percent of homebuyers can be considered "good targets for traditional neighborhood development." Director Evan Richert hopes the survey will interest builders in investing back into urban areas to protect working rural lands and open space. A survey of 602 recent home buyers as conducted in late 1998 by Market Decisions and Planning Decisions of South Portland. found that municipal land use ordinances discourage or ban building village developments, and builders have been constructing suburban homes for so long they doubt if there's another market. With a description of five distinct groups of home buyers identified by the survey.
