Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a proposal to add five cents to Maine's 19 cents per gallon gasoline tax, which is favored by Transportation Commissioner John Melrose and Gov. Angus King, but has been opposed by legislative Republicans. State senator Bill O'Gara, D-Westbrook, said a surplus estimated at $269 million makes it difficult to raise the gasoline tax. On the other hand, a reduction of the state sales tax by one-half percent, which Republicans strongly support, will use up some of the surplus. O'Gara said Maine should adjust the gasoline tax for inflation so it can avoid rancorous debates in the future.
