Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a plan to place seven modular buildings and up to 60 parking spaces in Augusta's Capitol Park. The plan was proposed by Maine senate president Mark Lawrence, but was withdrawn when Augusta residents loudly protested. The park has long been defended by those who see it as the sole substantial open space near the State House and worth preserving. With references to a Capitol Area Master Plan from the early 1960s, a proposal in the late 1980s to move the Supreme Court from Portland to Augusta, and comments by Historian Preservation Commission director Earle Shettleworth, and Sen. Beverly Daggett, D-Augusta.
