Abstract
Editorial on electric rate deregulation, which was passed by the Legislature in 1997 with the expectation that new entrepreneurial skill would go into the production of electricity, with consumers benefiting. But the buyers of Central Maine Power, Bangor Hydro and Maine Public Service assets were giant utilities from Florida, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and it's unlikely that Maine will have anything like the regulatory oversight of large out-of-state utilities that it did when only in-state interests were involved.
