Abstract

"Maine Perspectives" piece applauding the Legislature's rewrite of the school funding formula that brings it significantly closer to the national model the Legislature provided in 1985, but which has been seriously eroded in nearly every legislative session since then. The formula is central to the state's efforts to equitably provide public education from a base, the property tax, which is incapable of doing that. It is a fact that must be dealt with if Maine is to avoid either ruinous rates of taxation in some communities, hopelessly underfinanced schools, or both.
