Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on an effort to combat pollution and traffic congestion in Acadia National Park. With an estimated three million annual visitors, the park is one of America's most popular vacation spots. A new regional transit system called Island Explorer was launched this week. The $871,000 project will provide eight propane-fueled buses that operate on six different routes throughout Mount Desert Island. More than 100,000 riders are expected each year. The buses are free, handicapped accessible, and can carry up to 28 passengers and five bicycles each.
