Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the discovery of two lynx kittens recently born in the wild in Maine; proof that Canada lynx are repopulating the state. The last time kittens were found in Maine was in 1964, when they were killed to collect a bounty. Federal officials estimate that Maine has a lynx population of between 20 and 500. The state has had no open hunting season on lynx since 1968. Inland Fish & Wildlife Commissioner Lee Perry says managed timber harvesting in northern Maine has created ideal conditions for snowshoe hare, the lynx's choice prey.
