Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on Maine's loon population, which has held steady at about 3,500 adults for the last three years. The leading cause of loon deaths is lead poisoning by sinkers used by fishermen. The Legislature enacted a bill this year banning lead sinkers of one-half ounce or less starting in 2002. The second leading cause of loon deaths is blunt trauma caused by boats and jet skis. With details about educational and other protective measures.
