Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Maine's end of the millenium library building boom, which recalls the Carnegie era. Maine boasts 20 Carnegie libraries, all funded and built from 1899-1910. Major expansion programs are currently underway at libraries in the towns of Old Town, Guilford and Brunswick. And according to Benita Davis of the Maine State Library, the Maine State Library Network has replaced or updated computers in more than 180 of Maine's 270 public libraries, and 240 public libraries are now connected to the Internet. In the interest of connecting all of Maine's libraries, the Maine State Library is developing a comprehensive electronic catalogue, which will be available to anyone with access to the Internet.
