Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a lawsuit filed in federal district court in Washington by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association and several independent Maine farmers. The plaintiffs would stop the use of an insecticide-laden potato now grown in Maine because they believe use of the naturally occurring bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) in potato seed and other crops will hasten creation of Bt-resistant Colorado potato beetles. Monsanto, the chemical company that produces the New Leaf potatoes, has filed a motion to dismiss.
