Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a $1.25 million settlement of a class action lawsuit brought on behalf of sweatshop laborers on Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands, an American commonwealth in the western Pacific that is exempt from U.S. labor, immigration and customs laws. Workers are mostly young women from China, the Philippines and Bangladesh employed by clothing manufacturers such as J. Crew, Tommy Hilfiger, The Gap, Wal-Mart and other large firms marketing clothing. Bangor's Clean Clothes Campaign has been working to raise awareness about "the labor behind the labels" since its inception on Labor Day 1996.
