Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on Maine's voluntary Salmon Conservation Plan for Seven Maine Rivers, which Defenders of Wildlife and other conservation groups say is not working because of severe underfunding, lack of enforcement and lack of accountability. The Atlantic Salmon Federation and Trout Unlimited have joined in suing the federal government for failing to protect the fish under the Endangers Species Act. A spokesman for Gov. Angus King said economic effects of a listing "would be quite negative."
