Abstract

"Second Story" piece on Maine Blue Cross-Blue Shield, which might soon be acquired by an out-of-state health insurance company. Anthem Insurance of Indianapolis is expected to purchase the converted not-for-profit insurer for $120 million, and operate it as a for-profit entity, but some question if Anthem is the right company to take over Maine's troubled insurer. Anthem operates Blue Cross plans in four other states. The Maine plan, based in South Portland, was founded in 1939 as a "charitable and benevolent organization."
