Abstract

Cianbro Construction of Pittsfield is building weirs and traps on the Dennys and Pleasant rivers, approved by state and federal salmon officials as a major element in the state's 1997 conservation plan for salmon. Details on the construction and operation of the weirs, one of which might lead to possible civil penalties for siltation of the Dennys River. Local salmon fishermen oppose the weirs, which they say are so close to tidewater in Cobscook Bay that seal predation will be a problem, and a parking lot built for the construction, which they say violates the shoreline protection law.
