Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on Energy East's (EE) proposed $957 million acquisition of Central Maine Power (CMP). Though the public is apathetic, an intense debate is raging between Stephen Ward, Maine's public advocate, and CMP over the so-called acquisition premium of $473 million, which represents the difference between the $29.50 EE offered for CMP shares June 15 and the $20.06 the stock was trading for at the time of the announcement. Ward fears the cost of the 47 percent premium will be passed on to ratepayers.
