Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a proposal by the Atlantic Flyway Council, a federal advisory group, that would reduce the population of resident Canada geese along the Atlantic coast by more than a third within five years by extending the hunting season, using scare tactics, and even altering their habitat. The year-round, fixed Canada goose population in communities from Canada to northern Florida is estimated at 1.1 million. With reference to a flock of Canada geese in Bridgton that prompted so many complaints they were shot earlier this year by the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
