Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a series of public discussions called the "island stakeholder meetings," which are focusing on problems related to increased traffic along the Maine Island Trail. The trail currently consists of 98 islands and 12 mainland sites stretching from Portland to Machias. The stakeholders meetings began in response to reports of compacted soil, trampled vegetation, campsite sprawl and trail cutting, as well as troublesome deposits of human waste and toilet paper.
