Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on the Hathaway shirt company in Waterville, which was bought by financier Michael Liberty, former Maine governor John McKernan, George Denney of Cole-Haan fame and several others in 1996, after its previous owner, Warnaco, announced it would be shut down without an immediate sale. Liberty's personal acquaintance with one of the Wal-Mart heirs, Linda Walton, resulted in a Wal-Mart contract for 700,000 shirts a year for three years. That contract was renewed in November for another three years. With observations by those who make up Hathaway's leadership circle, and plans for the future under its new management led by president Don Sappington.
