Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the state's dozen or so biomass plants, which are financially unstable and could shut down altogether with the coming of deregulated power on March 1, 2000, leaving sawmill owners without a place to dump their sawdust and wood waste. A study by the Irland Group, a consulting firm, estimated it would cost Maine's 238 sawmills as much as $60 million to create alternatives to biomass plants. The Legislature's committee on sawmill biomass is trying to fashion a bailout plan.
