"News & Issues" piece on a major deer wintering area on the eastern slope of Ducktrap Mountain in Northport, which is in the way of a multi-million dollar corporate retreat proposed by MBNA. The credit card giant wants to force the deer into a new part of the woods that will be managed for wintering habitat, and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has agreed to the plan and issued a building permit on Dec. 3. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife had concerns, but has negotiated an agreement with MBNA. However, at least two groups, including the Coastal Waters Project and the Isleboro Island Trust, oppose the project and the former requested a public hearing, but DEP has denied that request.
