Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on with a detailed description of the controversy over the proposal by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service to list Atlantic salmon as endangered on eight Maine rivers, under the Endangered Species Act. Last week both agencies were in Machias to hear public comment, a meeting attended by Maine U. S. senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, who oppose the listing because of its potential effect on the economy of Washington County. Conservationists supported the listing, while many who opposed it questioned whether there was a genetically unique strain of salmon after a century of indiscriminate stocking.
