Abstract

Maine Education Services gave away more than $36,500 in scholarships over a two-year period, $23,000 of which went to skiers and snowboarders connected to Carrabassett Valley Academy, a private ski school at Sugarloaf USA. MES said the scholarships were part of a marketing effort designed to increase their share of the student loan business and that increasing loan volume gave it the resources to administer other scholarship programs at no cost. Richard Pushard, a former MES vice president, said marketing student loan programs is challenging because there is a new audience every year.
