Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on roadside memorials in Maine. John Melrose, commissioner of the Department of Transportation, said the number of memorials left at fatal accident sites in the state is unknown, but there are not enough yet for public concern. In 1998, there were 39,124 vehicle accidents in Maine, including 168 fatal crashes, in which 184 people died.
