Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on Gov. Angus King's proposal to replace the 160-year-old Augusta Mental Health Institute (AMHI) with a new $33 million facility. The goal is to reduce long-term treatment while expanding community services. The current population at AMHI is just 80 patients, down from an all-time high of 1,800 in the 1950s. But some lawmakers are concerned the proposed 92-bed hospital will be too small.
