Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on electricity deregulation in Maine, which began March 1. Customers will notice few changes in their new electric bills because most residential consumers have the same familiar suppliers, even though technically they're no longer served by monopolies. The state's utility companies were forced to sell their generating assets in what was promoted as a move toward competition and lower rates. It hasn't worked that way so far, but a handful of companies are waiting for a more advantageous market. With no new suppliers coming into to residential market, the standard offer will be given to all consumers. With references to the "standard offer" companies and their rates.
