Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a legislative bill that would control the price of prescription drugs in Maine. Gov. Angus King has not yet decided whether he will veto the bill, which has passed both houses with strong majorities. If King signs the bill, drug manufacturers will almost certainly go to court alleging state interference in interstate commerce. But Maine Attorney General Andrew Ketterer has said the law is defensible because of constitutional exemptions that allow states to override interstate commerce provisions to protect public health and safety.
