Abstract

The New England Fishery Management Council yesterday discussed a proposal that would change scallop fishing off the Atlantic coast, opening some new areas to commercial scallopers while closing others. The council is considering a rotational management strategy from Maine to North Caolina to boost scallop stocks by protecting them from being harvested too soon. The proposal remains under development and likely will not be implemented until late summer of next year.
