Abstract

A comparison between the isolated island community of Frenchboro on Long Island and the island of Isleboro, which has a summer population of 2,500. Isleboro residents can take a 15-minute ferry to the mainland, near Lincolnville, although only 25 of the 650 year-round residents commute. Conversely, about 150 people come onto the island every day for work, mostly in the service industries. Unlike Frenchboro, fishing is not an important factor in Islesboro's economy.
