Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on an effort by the state Bureau of Parks and Lands to lessen impact on Maine's 48 public trail islands this summer by posting voluntary camping capacities on 35 of them. The Maine Island Trail Association convened an advisory committee last fall, and identified three areas of particular concern, including Casco Bay, the Stonington section of Penobscot Bay, and the islands of Muscongus. Tom Bergh of Maine Island Kayak was optimistic that voluntary capacities might work in Maine though they have failed elsewhere. User groups like professional guides often have a "stewardship philosophy," said Steve Spencer, recreation specialist with BPL.
