Abstract

Colby College President William Cotter debated American Civil Liberties Union legislative counsel Robert Peck last week over the college's policy prohibiting harassment based on race, gender or sexual orientation. Cotter said the speech code was necessary to counter the loss of self-esteem which verbal harassment can result in, while Peck contended that a prohibition on offending words does more harm than good.
