Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on Maine Educational Services (MES), a private, nonprofit agency that fought public control of student loan programs and has gotten the state to pay at least $204,000 of its lobbying bill, and maybe more. The MES reimbursement was contained in an annual budget approved last week by Maine Educational Loan Authority (MELA), and critics are outraged that public money will reimburse a failed campaign to thwart public control. MES provides administratives services to MELA and Maine Educational Loan Marketing Corp. and claims political advocacy is a legitimate part of running the student loan programs.
