Abstract

Maine currently has 122 dams with a generating capacity of 731 megawatts, but it has been nearly 50 years since the state has witnessed the construction of a large-scale dam on any of its major rivers. The Basin Mills site was thought to be a good location for a major dam, and even won qualified support from the Maine Natural Resources Council, but opponents of the project are rejecting the idea that Basin Mills is the best new large-scale source of energy for the state.
