Abstract

After a recent Federal Energy Regulation Commission ruling that storage dams must be licensed, Great Northern Paper is considering the removal of six of its storage dams, which would cost about $1.8 million to license. Great Northern says the dams contribute inconsequential amounts of power and are costly to continue to operate. There is public concern in the Millinocket area over the possibility of lowered water levels, which could affect wild brook trout in Nesowadnehunk Lake, salmon in Harrington Lake, and about a dozen individual camps on the lakes, among other repercussions. Details on Great Northern's hydro and other holdings.
