Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge in Limestone. Its opening will be delayed by several months due to low funding and slow progress in cleaning up many impediments to public access. The 4,700-acre refuge established last year was scheduled to be dedicated June 2; now the date has been pushed back to August at the earliest. Manager Don Lima said the money needed to clear trails, clean up waste and establish basic infrastructure like parking, signage and outhouses has been hard to come by. This year's budget of $87,000 just covers salaries for Lima and his assistant and basic operating expenses.
