Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on a fire that destroyed part of the headquarters of the Maine Times (MT) in Bangor on June 29. Investigators believe the fire might have been set. In recent weeks, MT has been in the news rather than a reporter of it and as staffers wondered if these developments were related to the fire, it became clear that they also owed explanations to their readers. With details about the rejection of a series of ads that prompted the Casco Bay Weekly to characterize MT as "homophobic," and a cover story about District Attorney David Crook that contained a crude sexual reference and resulted in the firing of former MT editor Douglas Rooks.
