Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on Land Use Regulation Commission proposed rules that would eliminate the permit requirement for recreational gold prospectors and loosen other rules to accommodate them. Some prospectors think the allowance of a 12-horsepower dredge is too much for Maine waterways, that the dredging season is too short and that their activity needs more policing by the state. As well, the forest industry is uneasy with the proposed new rules because of potential landowner liability, and environmentalists are concerned because of the possible harm by power dredges on Class A streams.
