Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a September vote by the state's Land Use Regulatory Commission (LURC) on the Bureau of Parks and Lands' application to construct a boat launch at John's Bridge on the Allagash River. Gov. Angus King withdrew his nomination of Steve Wight of Newry to the commission after learning of the Agricultural, Conservation and Forestry Committee's interest in grilling Wight over his opposition to the development. The Sportsman's Alliance of Maine has said it will actively oppose Wight's reappointment to a fourth term on LURC. With details on how the seven members of the commission variously perceive the issue, which has come to represent the larger struggle over the north woods between environmentalists who want protection of the wild character of the woods and those who advocate increasingly convenient access for people and vehicles.
