Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the controversial sale of a $500 million portfolio by officials of the Maine Education Loan Marketing Corp. (MELMAC) to Nebraska-based NELnet, which holds a $3.4 billion student loan portfolio that is among the country's five largest. MELMAC officials said at a July 20 press conference that the sale was not intended to thwart public accountability measures imposed by the Legislature. But MELMAC's own documents, made available as a result of a lawsuit filed by the Attorney General to hold up the sale, tell a different story about the sale's consequence to students and MELMAC's attitude toward public accountability.
