Abstract

"Feature Story" piece on Molly Schauffler, a post-doctoral fellow with the National Science Foundation and the Department of Geological Science at the University of Maine. Schauffler has developed a database that lists all the school and other community groups in the state that are conducting environmenal field research as a teaching tool. Her goal is to create a comprehensive, interactive database that allows these groups to communicate with each other. At this point, her list includes 135 volunteer projects. Much of Schauffler's information is built on the earlier work of the Council on Environmental Monitoring and Assessment. With examples of volunteer programs associated with state agencies and making use of official training and funding sources.
