Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the state Department of Education's tight budget, which might stymie a plan to offer incentives to small schools to consolidate services. Cost inefficiency of rural schools is one of the driving factors behind the push for consolidation. The department wants single municipality schools and school unions to look at ways to share "non-instructional" resources such as buses, lunch programs and administration, but much might have to wait until it is known whether more funds will materialize later in the session.
