Abstract

Some Maine shrimp fishermen are using a finfish exclusion device called the Nordmore grate. Developed in Norway, the grate separates the groundfish from the shrimp and sends the bycatch to an escape hole in the top of the net. The device will allow the implementation of a no-bycatch rule in the Gulf of Maine shrimp fishery. The new regulation from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission says shrimpers must throw all large-mesh species back overboard.
