Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on the Maine Youth Center (MYC) in South Portland, which has come a long way from a revealing 1997 inspection by the state that opened the door to a massive reassessment of the goals and practices of the entire institution. Incorporating the guidelines of Maine's Learning Results, the school program is now headed toward greater integration with the overall goals of juvenile reform, including treatment of substance abuse and mental health issues. Fifty to 60 percent of the youth at MYC are on psychotropic medications, according to Superintendent Lars Olsen. With sidebars on some of MYC's new programs and several of its teachers.
