Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a study commissioned by the Finance Authority of Maine to determine why educational attainment levels in Maine have fallen relative to national averages. The report, "A Fresh Look at College-Going Rates in Maine," found that Maine ranks well above average in its high school graduation rate (92 percent), and near the middle in enrolling those students in college (52.4 percent). But researchers found that, while Maine is 44th in the nation in percentage of adults with undergraduate degrees, it is the 14th most expensive public university system in the country, and some 44 percent of college-bound Mainers leave the state.
