Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the new Maine toxics law, passed during the '99 legislative session, that lets companies under the jurisdiction of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) pick their own goals for improving toxics use, toxics release and hazardous waste. If the Legislature isn't satisfied with the voluntary reductions after six years, it can choose to return to mandatory goals. The law and the goals, now published by town on the DEP Web site, are receiving mixed reviews after the site's first official month on the Web.
