"News & Issues" piece on the nurse staffing shortage at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Last month it go so bad that two nurses were forced by hospital rules to work around the clock. Overworked nurses are now going to the Legislature for help. They want to ban mandatory overtime, set a floor on staffing levels, and recruit additional nurses through a new scholarship and loan program. The Maine Hospital Association opposes all the reforms except the scholarship and loan program, which has start-up costs estimated at $800,000.
