Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on inmates at Maine correctional facilities who are allegedly being denied needed psychiatric medications, according to prisoners, their families and advocates. Carol Carothers, head of the Maine Chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, confirmed that her office has received numerous complaints concerning correctional facilities in Windham, Thomaston and Charleston. All related to the decisions of psychiatrist Steven Gressitt, an employee of Prison Health Services, a private, Tennessee-based company that has contracted with Maine prisons since 1999 and this year will receive $5.2 million from the state for its services.
