Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a pending decision by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court concerning whether the state's Indian tribes are subject to the Freedom of Access Law. A ruling is expected soon, but six weeks have passed and tribal governors are getting tense because they say they will go to jail rather than comply if the court rules against them. The case is about internal tribal documents, mostly pertaining to water quality, that were requested by a coalition of paper companies and municipalities as part of an ongoing dispute over water regulation.
