Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a legislative bill sponsored by Rep. Jim Skoglund, D-St. George) that would have investigated allegations of abuse and mistreatment at the Supermax maximum security state prison. Though the bill was marked "emergency," the Criminal Justice Committee voted unanimously to table it until next session. Sen. Michael McAlevey, R-Waterboro, chairman of the committee, said he questioned the timing of the proposal in light of the fact that the role of the Supermax will change with the opening of the new state prison in Warren at the end of this year, and he also questioned the makeup of a proposed commission, which would include the Maine Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International, the Maine Council of Churches and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
