Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the recent theft of 15 volumes of historic maps and prints from the Bangor Public Library, including several large maps of Maine, collections of botanical prints, some astronomical maps and prints, a rare collection of Civil War prints, color plates of Diego Rivera frescoes, and an 1868 illustrated edition of Tennyson's "Idylls of the King." Library Director Barbara McDade estimates the street value of the lost materials at about $17,500. Several of the items have been recovered from unsuspecting local dealers and their customers, some as far away as Pennsylvania. Police say they have a suspect and expect to make an arrest soon. With comments by Sheldon Kaye, director of the Portland Public Library.
