"News & Issues" piece on charter schools and a legislative bill sponsored by Rep. Elizabeth Watson, D-Farmingdale, that would create smaller schools with more experimental teaching methods. Students at the New School, an alternative school in Kennebunk, are lobbying the Legislature in support of Watson's bill, because it would provide some tax support to families that currently pay tuition of $5,600. But the legislation is opposed by the Department of Education and the Maine Teachers Association, because they say charter schools drain money from existing public schools and divert reform energies away from the ongoing effort to enact statewide achievement standards.
